Grilled Seafood – Restaurant Pandamaran One Six Eight

An awesome meal is always rewarding after a tennis session. We decided to travel a fair bit from Klang to Kampong Baru Pandamaran to try out the famous Grilled Seafood. When we arrived at the Restaurant Pandamaran One Six Eight the place was already packed with customers. We wanted to try the Stingray but it was sold out so we opted for another type of fish and 2 portion of “Sotong”

This town is very close to the fishermen’s village so you can be rest assured that the seafood are fresh and selection varies daily so as the price according to demand and supply.

We had the grilled fish first for a reason and the natural flavor and sweetness of the flesh really stands out with just simple marination and goes well with the balacan infused chili paste and onion dipping sauce

What really stands out here in the grilled Sotong was how each piece was cooked to a really soft and tender texture with nothing being overcooked or under-cooked. The sauce is mixture of curry spices and his homemade sambal which by far the best I have ever tasted. This dish is very spicy and and will leave your lips numb. So I would suggest you order some rice to go with it.

The Siew Yoke with crispy skin, the meat was tender, juicy and well spiced, it will be much better if you top it up with some Siew Yoke sauce for more flavour.

The chicken was smooth and tender.

Hainanese Chicken Rice – Restoran Nasi Ayam Kam Kee

This shop is located on Jalan Sultan, in Chinatown, KL. From the outside the shop looks ordinary but they serve one of the best chicken rice in the city.

Good food, affordable but always packed. Go early if you want to try their tasty Kampung chicken, delicious char siew and other side dishes like the assam taste mustard plant. This restaurant is only available for lunch.

With plastics seats and tables set up on the footpath plus the woks set up outside this is as basic as it gets. But put aside any qualms that you may have, pull up a stool and peruse the menu (with pictures which helps) as this proved to one of the most enjoyable dining experiences of our time in KL. The service is unsmiling and somewhat dismissive but the speed of delivery of food and drinks was excellent and the flavor and freshness of the food was outstanding.

A restaurant that serve good chicken steamed rice aka Hainanese Chicken Rice. Go for drumstick or thigh in stead of breast meat. Do sample their red chili and ginger paste as it will not be too hot. Also, personally I will recommend on their chicken spare parts.

Since they were new in the business their menu was not ready for us so the supervisor recommended their dishes and we ended up ordering 11 dishes for dinner. We were all hungry and eager to try out their food which was very good and we completely forgotten to take pictures until the last dish which was the deep fried crispy fish skin with sweet and sour onion sauce.

WhatsApp Image 2018-06-15 at 12.24.46

Their main attraction was the fish meat(selection) mixed with other seafood drenched with their special broth and always on the stove to keep it warm. Extremely good!

The poached chicken rice which we ordered one day in advance(Tel: 0167899222). All was wonderfully done the chicken, the aromatic and fragrant rice and the chilly and ginger dippings was all great.

If you decide to try out William’s Kitchen be sure to order this 2 dishes.

We will be there again to try out their other dishes.

2018 FIFA World Cup Russia

Two of the many host cities for Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup – Moscow and Yekaterinburg.

Back in 2016 when Michael Chan and I were doing the Trans Siberian Railway adventure, Moscow and Yekaterinburg was one of the many stops that we made.

Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow under refurbishment for the world cup 2018.

The opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia will be played here on June 14, 18:00 and finals on July 15, 18:00

The above picture was taken during our boat cruise on Moscow river.

Luzhniki Stadium after completion.

I took the above picture when we were in Yekaterinburg.

Ekaterinburg’s Tsentralny Stadium, the largest sports facility in the capital of the Urals and home of the local FC Ural, is temporarily getting a new name, Ekaterinburg Arena, for the duration of the 2018 World Cup.

Tsentralny Stadium was built in 1953-1957. Its Soviet neoclassical façade is on the cultural heritage list. The eastern and western entrance gates are porticos with columns, adorned with statues of a milling machine operator, a skier, a marksman, a footballer, a female athlete with a torch, and a steel founder. The ticket office buildings outside the entrances are shaped as pylons. Yekaterinburg Arena is sited in the central Verkh-Isetskiy District, between Ulitsa Repina and Ulitsa Pirogova, across from the 1860 John the Baptist Cathedral on the other side of Ulitsa Repina.  The historical look of the building was preserved intact during the reconstruction. In fact, the architecture of the new parts of the building’s façade is intentionally neutral. They are only a backdrop, underscoring the merit of the historical parts. Following the reconstruction, completed in December 2017, the stadium now has a seating capacity of 35,000. It will be reduced to 23,000 post-World Cup.

Each stadium for the competition has to have a minimum capacity of 35,000, which was becoming an issue for the Ekaterinburg Arena in Yekaterinburg, expanding two of the stands beyond the limits of the stadium.

Among all the venue stadiums in Russia Ekateringburg Arena Stadium is the most unique and famous of all.

The 2018 World Cup venue Ekaterinburg Arena has odd new stands at either end of the pitch. The stands at either end (left and right) have been partially constructed outside of the stadium to hit a 45,000 capacity

Upcoming matches in Ekaturinburg Arena Stadium:

  1. Friday, 15 June 17:00 Egypt – Uruguay
  2. Thursday, 21 June 20:00 France – Peru
  3. Sunday, 24 June 20:00 Japan – Senegal
  4. Wednesday, 27 June 19:00 Mexico – Sweden

Here are some of the many attractions in Yekaterinburg.

The Church on the Blood

The events, which took place on the night of June, 17 1918, when the Tsar’s family were executed in the house of the military engineer Ipatiev in Yekaterinburg.

However, at the beginning of the 2000th it was decided to build the Church on Blood on the site of the Ipatiev House where the Romanov family were killed.

Foochow Cuisine – Yuan Yean Fishball Eating House

Yong Peng 永平 is an ideal stopover between KL and JB/Singapore as the town is just 5 minutes drive after exiting the toll gate (Exit 241/ Exit 242) and there are a number of interesting eateries. As the population in Yong Peng is mainly Foochow 福州 , it is an opportunity to try out unique Foochow cuisine.

Yuan Yean is now run by Thomas, the second generation owner. Thomas’s dad was the first to introduction the fish ball business in Yong Peng. After more fish ball restaurants opened in Yong Peng, the small town became famous for this speciality and every corner of the town selling fishball and such.

Plenty of variations from soup to dry and many types of noodles.

Yuan Yean’s claim to fame is their hand made 100% Ikan Parang fish balls with no MSG or preservatives. Tender, bouncy with a nice fresh fish aroma.

Besides the fish balls, another Must Try is the old school Foochow fish balls.

Foochow fish ball is unique as it is like wanton except that the minced pork is warped in fish paste instead of wanton skin. Foochow fish ball is a blend of fish and pork flavours with an interesting mouth feel. Not commonly found except in places where the Foochow people live.

The fried tofu skin and fried fish cake. Both were crispy and the fish cake has a soft inside with a nice fish aroma.

Muar otak otak is really good stuff. Compact, dense with fresh Ikan Tenggiri meat and held together with coconut milk and aromatic mildly hot spices. Yuan Yean got this from a leading otak otak maker in Muar  – steamed and served on order.

Totally awesome meal!
